BREAKING news! Carvana & Vroom is bleeding cash. Is Ecommerce in auto DOA?

I actually think most dealers have moved to a model of accepting lessor and lessor front end grosses over time, moving to a "total gross" model as you describe. This is a move further down the path, this is Amazon. Manage the customer experience on the front end, manage the seller relationship...

BREAKING news! Carvana & Vroom is bleeding cash. Is Ecommerce in auto DOA?

Could not disagree more. It is Carvana taking a run at becoming a marketplace. If dealers acquiesce and decide to simply leverage Carvana's reach by listing cars on their site then they can slowly pull back their own inventory bought at auctions, only selling high margin inventory bought...

BREAKING news! Carvana & Vroom is bleeding cash. Is Ecommerce in auto DOA?

Exactly. Not surprised that fleet owners or captives would explore such a partnership but dealers? I'm trying to understand the thought process and motivations, struggling to understand it.

BREAKING news! Carvana & Vroom is bleeding cash. Is Ecommerce in auto DOA?

Agree most(all) other dealers operating this way would be out of business without the support of the public markets. Totally disagree that they are a “low tech” dealer. While they are not purely a technology company, they are the most technologically advanced dealer in the country, that’s not an...

BREAKING news! Carvana & Vroom is bleeding cash. Is Ecommerce in auto DOA?

I typically(possibly up to this point exclusively) post positive updates about what is going on with Carvana. I have to say this is makes me cringe a bit, particularly after issuing more shares at $65.

BREAKING news! Carvana & Vroom is bleeding cash. Is Ecommerce in auto DOA?

A couple quick points from the earnings transcript a few of days ago to consider: “We also had a phenomenal quarter in GPU posting over $2,400.” - So while I agree the ad spend is enormous when you focus on the fundamental unit economics they are making incremental gains each qtr “Our EBITDA...

BREAKING news! Carvana & Vroom is bleeding cash. Is Ecommerce in auto DOA?

Grabbed this from a LinkedIn post of a pretty progressive, successful dealer... To me, this accentuates just how Carvana continues to differentiate itself from even the best dealership alternatives. Relying on numerous third party providers is absolutely necessary and is also more likely lead...

    DealerAuthority Leadership in the Workplace

Good topic to think about. I am sure it's partly because I read this fairly recently but I think it is a good encapsulation of what strong leaders do. Especially in environments with remote teams and lean management structures. https://www.theepochtimes.com/meet-them-where-they-are_2715929.html

BREAKING news! Carvana & Vroom is bleeding cash. Is Ecommerce in auto DOA?

Fairly predictable and likely equally inconsequential. AutoNation USA stores are sputtering and they had to make a move after the Lithia/Shift partnership.

BREAKING news! Carvana & Vroom is bleeding cash. Is Ecommerce in auto DOA?

Probably worth mentioning the recent vRoom raise as well, the markets are responding to the Lithia move, CVNA down 5% yesterday and close to another 5% in premarket https://techcrunch.com/2018/09/01/used-car-site-vroom-is-raising-70m-six-months-after-a-big-round-of-layoffs/

By the verbiage of the contracts I believe they technically are, thus the 28 day max length agreements.

    Cox Automotive Acquires Clutch Technologies

Clutch already powers most of the OEM subscription models as well as dealers in 25 or so states. It is a very crowded space, including another Cox backed entity Flexdrive.

BREAKING news! Carvana & Vroom is bleeding cash. Is Ecommerce in auto DOA?

Steve, when did you get so sensitive.... Forgive me, I was almost certain you were the author of a few articles about how Carvana would fail....must have been another Steve.... I am not up for disputing your math or how you derived a 2 Billion valuation but I would offer a couple of thoughts...

BREAKING news! Carvana & Vroom is bleeding cash. Is Ecommerce in auto DOA?

"That said, their base was relatively small and their gross margins are still just shy of the average dealer. They will plateau because we are talking about used cars here and not books, videos, shoes, or groceries. There aren't any suppliers to muscle (like Amazon did to theirs). There aren't...

BREAKING news! Carvana & Vroom is bleeding cash. Is Ecommerce in auto DOA?

I suppose disruption in the traditional sense of totally supplanting long standing offerings may never happen. But Carvana is going to sell 100k used cars this year, those cars have to be coming from someones share. And those annual numbers will undoubtedly grow.
