I'm searching for public API's that would be useful in building a new marketplace for dealer inventory and privately owned autos.

I'm also interested in learning how dealers bulk upload information for ads.

    Thanks.

Have you looked at the Edmunds.com API.

Bulk data push are done using comma, tab delim data feeds... every vendor has a different format... and their are a lot of vendors. Sites like oodle, vast, backpage take XML.

Bulk data pull are the same... you can come up with a standard way you want the data and vendors send it to you. Or you deal with different formats from the vendors.

Alternative option is to go with something like DMI, HomeNet, Liquid, AutoJini (me) and have'em handle the data transformation.

I know quite a few services / vendors (including HookLogic) that has tapped into Edmunds API with some great success.

Thanks. I have access to the edmunds api. Good to hear that others have had success with them.

Found cars.com has an api and will look into that soon.
Autotrader replied that I had to be affiliated with a dealership already in their system, and then rely on vauto or homenet for api access.
    No response from truecar.
Dealerrater indicated they do not have an api.

I believe Vast has a publishers channel that you could sign up for. That would probably be the best source for inventory data as you get a deep source of inventory data (many vendors feed to them). As far as API's to other inventory providers/DMS and such you will need credentials for but they do have APIs.

In the past I've used Oodle's API for syndicated inventory.
However, the limit the number of calls to the API
And its always going to be slower than loading data directly from your database/server.
