Website is face of your business or company, so you should aware enough that your website should be visible to every search engines with out any obstruction.I am writing some points, try to keep in mind while you are going to design your website, hope that will help you grow your website & business.
1.Domain Name:Try to adopt keyword or targeted business oriented domain name for better ranking, .com domain will be best for business website but you can go for others.
2.Navigation:While you make the navigation of the website it should be on the TOP that a common visitor can easily find his desired url destination.
3.Make keyword reach inner page url, like www.domainname/keyword.htm, thats easier for search engine robots to identify.
4.Content creation:Make keyword reach content for every page, that should well optimized content for search engines, I would like 4% keyword density for my contents.
5.Website structure:Try to maintain well structure of your website..All web site pages should be as close to the root directory as possible, as pages closer to the root directory are often given more weight with the search engines; ie., www.domainname.com/page1.htm as opposed to www.domainname.com/directory/page1.htm
Alta Vista mentions this in their FAQ for Webmasters. Pages closer to the root also seem to have higher PageRanks in Google. This is for websites internal structure mainly.But that also depends on the proper categorization of different topics. If you think that all related topics should come under specific directory then there is no problem in doing that.

6.Page title:each every page title should highlighted by using h1 tags along with relevant content.
7.Use Title,Description, keywords for all the pages ,Google search engine may consider the first 66 chars in webpage title and yahoo search engine may consider the first 100 to 120 chars.In terms of Meta description try to limit it for 30 words.
8.Relevant Graphics: Graphics should be relevant to content. Also use alt tag containing the relevant keyword for graphics
9.Avoid image links use text links
10.Avoid using frames.
11.Now you can use Flash, Flash is readable for Google now, though I dont like Flash on websites for make it more SE friendly.
12.Use simple easy crawling tables for websites.
13.Better to use CSS(Cascading style sheet) to reduce the page size and faster download.
14.some other points are: Any folder should not have more than 30 files in it,most of the images to be in a folder called images,use robots.txt file and sitemap of the website is very much important search engine crawling.
Integrate Twitter,Facebook(Facebook like button),Linked In,Stumple upon social networks links.
