    New car listing site?

@Chris Leslie, I tend to agree with what Joe mentioned in this regard. Increasing conversion rate among existing shoppers might be the way to go. In terms of getting shoppers to buy more often, individual dealerships should attempt that by keeping in touch with their customers. "tempt"...

    New car listing site?

@JoePistell I have always worked as part of larger teams. Although I have worked on all aspects of the "stack" so to speak, I have never really done a venture on my own. This would be a first. In all my prior engagements, mostly for large corporations, even when I led teams of upto 10 engineers...

    New car listing site?

Chris, Agreed that the prototype will teach me a few things and tell me about the feasibility. I have an even bigger problem right now. I was trying to come up with a name for this site, and well...let's just say this: Anything I came up with was already taken.

New Jersey approves direct sales of Teslas

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/law-direct-sale-tesla-cars-jersey-29733104 Is this the first shot in a long list to come? Have dealers in NJ capitulated? What will the impact be? I didn't think this would happen. How do you as a dealer react to this?

    New car listing site?

@tomwhitejr The website has to be free as I don't have any money :) My statement that you quoted above is in fact true. The only contact I have had with the dealerships is as a car buyer. So reading up what's available on the internet is one way to build *some* knowledge about the industry. I...

    New car listing site?

@craigh That's a neat looking website. Proving that a lead has not been on another website will be difficult.

    New car listing site?

@skutchhenks I want to keep the site banner ad free. The classifieds site is already a place for ads for cars for sale. Ads on top of that is something I find irritating. Is there a way to get compensated from just the dealers who benefit from the service?

    New car listing site?

Ok. Point taken. A new site is not a walk in the park and will likely require investment in the millions (, in addition to a superior product) to have a shot at competing. So my first goal is to actually build a superior product. I will keep you posted on my progress and introduce the prototype...

    Facebook Reviews

I think google will be the best place. Very few people type in the URL any more. They just google the name of a dealership for instance. And the reviews are right there. Cars.com or for that matter any website will be a distant second.

    New car listing site?

@craigh I am definitely not a car guy. The more I read about the industry, with what is available online, I am just amazed at the amount of depth of knowledge one can acquire about the auto industry. Once I do get a prototype working (and that in itself will tell me if I am on a wild goose...

    New car listing site?

@DealerAdvocate , Valid points were brought up by Joe. I haven't answered the questions of "how are you going to go up against established players?", "what do you have new that is not offered already". I would like to answer those with a prototype or an actual business! A few others also...

    New car listing site?

The barrier to entry is extremely low. So I think I am going to give this a shot. I do agree that my calculations are at a back of the envelope level at this time, but I will soon find out.

    New car listing site?

Not sure why you should be "sick" of anything. Are you telling me the existing sites are the best? Nothing better can be done? We are arguing about semantics here. I don't think the traditional dealer model is going to go anywhere anytime soon. No one click shopping for now (even though some...

    New car listing site?

Agreed. I am certainly no car guy, and am reading up as much as I can. I can brainstorm, but cannot match the knowledge and depth of experience of a dealer. Once a prototype is ready I will be reaching out to a few dealer contacts for partnership.

    New car listing site?

Yes. I agree that I will be up against the big guys. I personally think I can do better than cargurus. Maybe I won't, but I would like to find out!

The Top Vehicle Listings Websites - Who's NEXT?

Wanted to share my 2 cents... 1. Dealer website awareness / Branding is necessary for any dealer. This is true regardless of your intent to post to 3rd party classifieds sites. The bigger your dealership / group, the more you need to spend on branding and direct traffic to your site. 2...

    New car listing site?

Yago, Yes. The "idea" here is nothing earth shattering. But user experience will be. And a site built with what I have in mind cannot be copied easily. These are not features that you add to an existing site. Well you can add one or two. But to copy the whole concept for an existing major will...

    New car listing site?

Chris, I am not sure I agree with the software part being dead simple. Yes, if you were entering the market 10-15 years back, it may have been simple. Now, we are approaching near "big data" levels of info to process. The goal at a high level are: - What can I do to enhance customer shopping...

    New car listing site?

Joe, certainly didn't mean it that way. I was only illustrating that even a product just as good as what is already out there has an opportunity. So something better has an even better chance. I do not have a prototype. I have starting researching this business opportunity just recently. There...

    New car listing site?

Thanks Jason! Joe, you are right. There are a number of sites that do this, but none too effectively. I am operating under the assumption that a better product will result in a "winner take all" type situation. This is how it has been always in the tech/internet market. Yahoo, Alta Vista...
