California Asks Residents To Avoid Charging Electric Vehicles Due To Blackout Risk Days After Unveiling New Gas Car Ban

Only days ago, California officials unveiled their plan to phase out new gas-powered vehicles. And now, they're asking residents to avoid charging their electric vehicles in the interest of not overwhelming the power grid.

Get conservative:
  1. Set your thermostat to 78 degrees
  2. Turn off unnecessary lights and using avoid using large appliances like A/C
  3. Avoid charging your electric vehicle
Because... “If left unmanaged, the power demanded from many electric vehicles charging simultaneously in the evening will amplify existing peak loads, potentially outstripping the grid’s current capacity to meet demand.”

Massachusetts, Washington, and Virginia* have previously passed laws conforming their states to standards approved by the California Air Resources Board.

The Inflation Reduction Act, signed earlier this month, offers $7,500 in tax credits for the purchase of new electric vehicles, at the same time Ford and GM raised their electric vehicle prices by approximately the same amount.

What sense does any of this make?
What's the EV market vs Energy supply going to look like in the next 3 to 5 years?

*Virginia have denounced the state’s laws — greenlit last year when Democrats controlled the General Assembly — and are seeking to repeal them.
