If you had to do it all over again, BDC or no BDC? And unicorns...

I agree 100%. Yes, it eliminates expenses but it also allows you to pay good people. I'm in that store several times a week. I was there today. At the desk, all day long, they are calling salespeople to the office. "Where are we with Mr. and Mrs. Smith?" If they don't get the right...

If you had to do it all over again, BDC or no BDC? And unicorns...

First, Hey Joe, you might remember me from years past. Some topics will bring me out of retirement and this is one of them. You need a BDC if you salespeople aren't properly trained, unmotivated and poorly supervised. I walk into stores and think their salespeople should be ticked for...

What does the future hold for the car business?

High commissioned salespeople? I retired after over 40 years in the car business. I can't think of a more miserable job than selling cars if there is no money in it. I have never met any successful salesperson that I would refer to as a "shark". You don't understand the most people are not...

What does the future hold for the car business?

Over the more than 40 years in the business, I was involved with some really good sales organizations. Our competitors said our success came from giving cars away while the manufacturers complained that we would sell even more cars if we didn't hold so much gross. In their darkest hour, Lee...

What does the future hold for the car business?

Alex, I don't disagree with anything you say. Margins have always been low in the car business but nothing like what we are seeing today. If we were to see another recession like 2008, how many dealers would survive? I think over 20% would tank.

What does the future hold for the car business?

It has been over five years since I retired. I loved the car business. I don't miss it but still love being around car people. We just went through some record sales years. The economy is booming but sales are not what I expected and margins are really weak. I believe that during the next...

Dealers Superimposing their Pictures in Front of the Dealership

I was told that Dealer.com and other website vendors limit the size of the pictures. Then of course you have to deal with AutoTrader and Cars.com. Good pictures look even better when they are larger.

Dealers Superimposing their Pictures in Front of the Dealership

He had some serious issues when I met him. He would fly of the handle at very little provocation. Completely changed from that. With his disability, he makes a decent living. He doesn't require benefits because he has them. He has a two year old son and his dedication to him is incredible...

Dealers Superimposing their Pictures in Front of the Dealership

Still don't like the dealership in the background unless it is for sale. When you look at the two, the focus is on the Porsche. If someone is in the market, that should be the only focus. For the old guys, that know me, I had and alternative reason for jumping in here. After I retired, I...

Dealers Superimposing their Pictures in Front of the Dealership

It has been about 7 years since I was actually working in a dealership. You have quality pictures. I'm still a fan of filling the frame with the vehicle. It may not look natural or aesthetically pleasant but I want the front and rear bumpers, especially on the first car, to nearly touch the...

Dealers Superimposing their Pictures in Front of the Dealership

Interested in what others think of this practice. When people are looking for a specific car and get to the search result page, I always wanted my vehicles to fill the picture as much as possible. I am convinced that most people use tablets and the pictures on the SRP are already very small...

Inventory Management - What's your Favorite Feature?

I hope you are right but I have seen too many good companies that were gobbled up and then turned to shit. Don't get me wrong, I was always a fan of AutoTrader because it worked for me and I could easily justify the cost but how long since they purchased Homenet and vAuto?

Inventory Management - What's your Favorite Feature?

I pop in from time to time. Someone needs to keep an eye on you. Still retired. Too much rain and wind for fishing.

Inventory Management - What's your Favorite Feature?

Over the years, I used most of these systems. My favorite was Homenet and my least favorite was vAuto. With Homenet you rename the files and batch load them which is very fast. vAuto is slow and a nightmare if you have a lot of vehicles to load and God help you if you want to sort them after...

iPhone VS Pro Camera for Online Inventory Photos?

Jeff, I enjoyed the walk-around. What software did you use to edit it with?

iPhone VS Pro Camera for Online Inventory Photos?

Being mirrorless, the Sony A6xxx is about the same size as a phone with a lens. It would be serious overkill for taking inventory pictures and videos. Works well in low light. It is the fastest autofocus camera made and the battery life is a real plus.

    Tesla Reality Check?

The left wing media is more in the tank for Tesla than they were for Hillary. Tesla can't even begin to meet it's production levels and it loses nearly $20K when it sells one. They are facing strong competition from the likes of BMW that threatens to produce a vastly superior product. If it...
