So how do you create a custom avatar? I can pick one, and I have a picture uploaded.. but how do I make my avatar my picture or upload a custom avatar?

Based on the FAQ it looks like we don't have access to upload a custom avatar currently.
What are avatars?
Avatars are small images that people use to identify or distinguish themselves to other forum members. In some cases the administrator will not allow avatars or only allow them for specific members. The administrator can also provide some stock avatars people can use, or they can allow members to upload their own custom avatars from their own computers. These avatars will be displayed as part of the user info in posts, as well as in the public profile.

I also don't have access to change my Avatar as far as I can see unless I've missed it.

Maybe this will help clear up a few questions on adding an avatar. I agree..it's not so easy to find.
When you log-in click on Quick Links in the top Nav.
Then click on Edit Options
On the left side you will see Edit Avatar, this is where would can choose from several default avatars we have loaded OR upload your own.
