Back in the day, OEMs would bring brands to the US and award the franchises to existing franchisees (like Fiat) or use badge engineering to work them into their existing model lineup (like Opels becoming Saturns and Buicks in the US).


Now, the fact that they are EVs apparently gives some OEMs an excuse to bypass dealers.
