I've meet salespeople that have been in the business for 15-20 years that flat out just know about cars. They don't know the exact number of horse power but they know whether a particular diesel engine was good in certain years, how it changed in the new model, the differences between model changes, whether a trim is worth the extra money, common transmission issues in particular models, etc.
It is sad the fact that the knowledge is hard to access, they know this and they keep it to themselves unless you meet them in person. They never want to write these things in the dealership website because it takes their time and it doesn't benefit them directly. Over the years many salespeople have asked if they can have their own website but updating it, dealer with the inventory, and other technicalities make this challenging.
I think Facebook is a great avenue for a salesperson to have an online resume of knowledge. Grab the cars that you like, you don't have to do all of them, and write that knowledge about them. If you are clear about your page "Mike the truck guy", "Mike Diesel Only", "Mike Knows Used Cars", etc you can attract the proper people without any shocks when they see what the page is about. What is great about this (from the sales person POV) is that no matter where you go with your career, people can follow you from dealer to dealer.
BTY- All this, everything here, is free. You just need to make the effort.
