The Fed hike costs a floored car about 19 cents a day. The days are the expensive part.

I build the software dealerships use to post to Facebook Marketplace, and the hike sent me into our data. Most coverage is about buyers: Kelley Blue Book puts it at about $4 a month on the average used payment. You feel it first on the floorplan.

Prime went from 6.75% to 7.00% on Sept 17, the first hike since July 2023, and SOFR jumped 23 basis points the same day. OPENLANE's 10-K says AFC prices floorplan at prime plus a margin, so on a prime-based line the meter moved that morning. The Fed projects one more hike by year end.

Math, assuming prime plus 2 (9.00% now, 8.75% before), on the $28,295 median ask across 10,823 priced units our dealers posted:

Before: $6.783 a day
Now: $6.977 a day
The hike alone: $0.194 a day, $5.81 per 30 days

Arguing against myself: 19 cents a day won't sink anyone, and you floor at what you paid, which is below ask, so this overstates your principal. The hike raises the price of every day a car sits. A 60-day unit runs about $419 in interest, and the 10-K puts the due date at sale or after a set period, generally 30 to 90 days.

Two places I watch days leak:

1. Price changes. 22.6% of our listings (2,443 of 10,798) changed price after going live. A cut that hits the DMS on day 30 and the ad on day 37 is a week at a number you already rejected, about $49.

2. Posting day. Over 90 days and 17,778 posts, Thursday had 3,118 and Sunday had 956, 3.3x. Our dealers post mostly on weekdays, so a unit that clears recon Friday afternoon can wait two or three days for an ad: $14 to $21 on a car no Marketplace shopper can see.

One move this week: pull every unit over 30 days and put the DMS price next to the live Marketplace price. Every mismatch is days paid on a price you already abandoned.

Full disclosure, I build software for this, so weigh accordingly. Ours, AutoLander, pushes feed price changes to the live listing and pulls sold units. A spreadsheet and 20 minutes shows the same gap.

The numbers above are from our 2026 report: Facebook Marketplace Used-Car Report 2026 | AutoLander

Did your lender pass the full 25 through, and what are you paying over prime on used?

A software vendor who builds Facebook Marketplace posting tools for dealerships digs into their own data to quantify the real floorplan cost of the Fed's September 2024 rate hike — roughly 19 cents per day on the median-priced used unit. The post frames the math around prime-based floorplan lines (e.g., AFC/OPENLANE) and contrasts the modest per-unit daily cost against the bigger operational risk: cars sitting too long. The key insight is that the rate hike itself is almost trivial; the expensive variable is days-in-inventory, making turn velocity the more urgent management lever.
