Twitter For Your Dealership: Why & How

Twitter? For a car dealership.. No For a band yes. I'll pass and use Facebook. Twitter will fade away within time. Only benefit of twitter is searching for status update keywords and replying to each one. Other than that, I'm just not interested in it. I've tried, it's a waste of time, better things to focus on.

Can I just say that I'm a little frustrated with all of the vendors that come in and throw around the words 'SEO' and 'Social Media' in the same sentence without any real understanding of what they're talking about? I notice in the original post she mentioned that having a Twitter account would provide 'SEO value' -- to what extent? Please be more specific.

I always try to ask salespeople this question and most of them don't have a very good answer. Sure, the twitter page might show up on a branded keyword search below several other pertinent pages, but beyond that, what REAL SEO value does it provide? I understand that having a social presence is important, but is it really necessary for every salesperson to try and tell me that their service is great for SEO? Let's be honest here, you don't make a twitter account to boost your SEO. In our niche, having a strong twitter presence doesn't affect dealer website rankings very much. Let's just call it like it is and say that it's a branding tool.

In Katie's defense, she wrote at length about a half dozen very good reasons to be on Twitter and added this PS. "Twitter is search engine friendly. Your Twitter content will be found by google, adding SEO value."

Now Kyle, your focus seems to be on SEO. That's well and good, but that wasn't Katie's focus at all. It was her "oh, by the way".

You wrote considerably more in your (well written) rant about SEO than Katie did in her entire post.

Just Sayin!;)

Hey Ed,

Trust me, I feel ya. I think I'm just trying to let loose some bottled up frustrations that have been lurking after many-a-meeting with people that throw the term 'SEO' around so loosely. It's fair to say I did some very selective reading of her original post, which was obviously very well thought out on Katie's part. So my apologies for sounding like a hot head if you're still reading anything on this forum, Katie :)

I was really trying to bring up the topic of 'SEO' being used as a selling point by salespeople in the industry & Katie's (albeit brief) use of the term reminded me of some things that have happened in the past with other individuals.

Not only I agree with that but with the fact that we as vendors find the most interesting things at times when visiting dealers. From the guy that owns 2 websites both "his name+ make.com" AND ".net" but not his "geolocation + make.com" to the guy that owns 1 space in Google out of everything there is to play with. We just found today a MAJOR Ford dealer ($95,000/month ad budget) that didn't have "Ford dealer" as a category in their Google places.

So for some dealers in stage one of the digital era:

Twitter offers great SEO value.
People like Kathy can help them get started.

What are you guys talking about?

I added a twitter account for one of my dealers and our SEO went sky rocket!! Just like that!!

Twitter for your dealership (business) - how and why?

There are books written on this stuff.

We're in the world of content marketing, twitter helps push content. But it's your CONTENT that matters.

Well Twitter is a social bookmark (Some search engines factor in), so you'll see a very very tiny gain but not much with it alone. Combine that with other social sites and you can actually rank a site higher in the SERPS.

Question from an SEO "unworthy: " discussions around SEO tend to lead toward a discussion of back-links. With Twitter pages linking to all sorts of pages -- if those pages have relevant content, would that help SEO?

I've always been under the impression that they were "no follow" links. But obviously the more retweets, the more traffic. The more traffic, the more opportunities of getting a solid link to your post or page. Giving the post more juice for the SERPS.

I'm sure it doesn't stop there.

Throw in a side-order of "Who's Paying For The Twitter Firehose Feed?"--you'll recall that Google was once leasing the feed for their live search functionality. If you're going to be paying that kind of money for a feed like that, you could bet on that being used as a signal.
