Shipping a car can be smooth if you know the potential pitfalls upfront!
1. The Two Main Carrier Types
Car shipping generally boils down to these two options, and the price difference is significant:- Open Carrier: This is 90% of what's out there. It’s affordable and fast because there are many of them. Just know your car is exposed to road grime and weather—it's like driving it yourself, but on a bigger truck.
- Enclosed Carrier: This costs 30-60% more. It’s only necessary for high-value, classic, or heavily customized cars. It provides insurance peace of mind, but it limits your scheduling options because far fewer enclosed carriers run these routes.
2. "Door-to-Door" Isn't Always Literal
The term "door-to-door" is standard, but it really means "as close as safely and legally possible." If you live on a narrow, dead-end street with low-hanging trees, a huge commercial truck simply won't risk it. Be prepared to meet the driver in a nearby accessible location (like a large shopping center or easy-to-access lot).3. The Price Isn't Always Set in Stone
When you get a super low quote, be skeptical. Sometimes, brokers quote a low price just to win your business, but the carrier won't accept the load until the price is raised. Your shipment might sit for days or weeks until the rate is competitive enough for a driver to take it.- Pro Tip: If you have flexibility, tell the carrier that. If you need it done ASAP, expect to pay a premium (the "expedited" fee).
4. Vetting Your Broker/Carrier
- Check FMCSA/DOT: Any legitimate carrier must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). You can look up their DOT number to see their safety ratings and insurance details.
- Ask about Insurance: Confirm the limits of their cargo insurance and if there's any deductible. Take clear, timestamped photos of your car's condition right before the truck leaves—this is your proof if anything happens.
