In the shops we work with, what breaks first at 30/60/90 isn't the customer — it's the follow-up. A collector starts a text conversation with a past-due customer, gets pulled into something else, and never follows up. At 60 days the customer disputes something and nobody can reconstruct what was said. At 90 days the broken promise from week two was never flagged.
We built our AI Collector to close those specific gaps, and the checklist below is what we'd use to judge any collections AI — including ours:
1. AI takeover. If a collector starts a text conversation but doesn't follow up — busy, out, absent — the AI picks it up. No account goes quiet because a human got busy.
2. A real event log. Every touch, timestamped, in one place. When a customer disputes something, you pull the record instead of arguing from memory.
3. Broken-promise alerts. The system flags the collector when a customer breaks a promise, so it gets handled instead of discovered at day 90.
4. Context for the human. Credit stats and an alert if there are recent texts from the customer, so the collector walks in informed.
5. Self-service when the customer wants it. The collector sends a payment portal link so customers who prefer managing things themselves can see their account details and handle it. When they're ready to pay in the conversation, it requests money right there: payment link, customer replies "yes," payment executes with approval, receipt goes out immediately, then recurring setup is offered with a courtesy reminder before each future run.
6. Promise-date reminders. When a customer promises to pay on a date, the system sends an automated text on that date reminding them how much they owe. If they respond, the AI follows up from there.
7. Failed recurring payment? Immediate contact. The moment a recurring payment fails, the AI contacts the customer right away, asks why, and requests a remedy — no waiting for the next shift.
The through-line: the AI isn't replacing the collector. It's making sure nothing falls through the cracks around the collector — and that every conversation leaves a record. No matter how backed up the shop is, no matter what turn the conversation takes, the AI Collector working together with the human collector manages it. At the end of the day the customer pays. The art of lending is collecting.
Disclosure: I work at ASN Software. The Collector is built into our AutoDealer Plus DMS / AutoFinance Plus platform — no setup fees, no minimum, pennies per text conversation. Dealers on AutoDealer Plus can see it in action via a demo: Request a Demo - ASN Software
