Don't under estimate the power of the open source GiMP! It's quite a powerful tool and can do just about anything I need it to.

It's also painful to use and quirky. While it's free, it's the opposite of intuitive.

I like ryanabbott's suggestion. I think I'll have to give Powerpoint a try for creating slides.
