IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 02, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Autobytel Inc. (Nasdaq:ABTL), a pioneer and leading provider of digital automotive services connecting in-market car buyers with dealers and OEMs, today announced that it plans to change its name to AutoWeb, Inc. effective October 9, 2017.

"When Autobytel was founded in 1995, the era of digital leads and clicks was in its infancy," said Jeff Coats, president & CEO of Autobytel. In connection with this name change, the company's stock ticker symbol will change from "ABTL" to "AUTO" on The Nasdaq Capital Market. Trading under the new stock ticker symbol is anticipated to commence on October 9, 2017.

While a portion of the public was familiar with the name Autobytel, most who heard it were likely confused as to what the company did.

"Cars via the telephone?"

The Autoweb name will mean more to consumers, and that brand better describes the current product set to dealers.
 
Both names bring me back to my initial days in Automotive. I remember seeing an Autobytel ad on a train traveling through NJ from PA to NY, advertising the fact that you could shop for cars via telephone. Autobytel had recently purchased AutoWeb's website business only to dump it 2-3 years later. That's how I made my first Million...offering websites to the 300 dealers about to lose their websites.

This was 2001 at the time. Most of the dealers Jesse Biter and I called during that time believed the Internet was a fad, or hated their websites and Internet shoppers. We got about 80 dealers converted to HomeNet websites with inventory. The rest, you can say, is history.
