As there is so much confusion with GA4, and some smart folks on this forum, I thought a dedicated thread could help both newbies and seasoned marketers.

Hopefully by now you have setup your account(s), gotten some events firing, and marked the appropriate events as conversions.

Here's a big issue we discovered last week, that any GA4 users should be aware of:

Over the past few weeks, Google has been quietly wrecking dealership GA4 accounts, by deciding to add old, outdated conversion events.

Ugh, what??? You mean we have our GA4 all setup, running perfectly, and Google decides to system-inject conversion events for page views, old confirmation-page goals, and more?

Yes, we noticed for some of our customers, old GA3 goals are being resurrected by Google, and being marked as Conversion Events, wrecking GA4 reporting for the month. Yes, it really sucks, and creates work for our teams.

So we figured we would share, so you all can inspect your properties, fix them, and prevent reoccurrence.

If you have noticed that your Google Analytics 4 conversions have suddenly jumped in the last few weeks, check the screens shown in the attached. You can see how to inspect if system-generated conversions are being created, and where to flip the switch and tell Google to stop this nonsense.

And keep in mind, if you overstate GA4 conversion events, your “engagement rate” is also automatically wrecked, since any session resulting in a conversion, automatically is an engaged session.

With GA4 no longer having Views, regular auditing of GA4 conversion events is a must.

Anyone else seeing this issue???
