How CarGurus.com makes money

After reading Joe's article on CarGurus.com I had a look around and found how they make money: CarGurus.com: Find and share automotive knowledge - CarGurus

What they say:

Researching a particular car on our site? You might see links on our site to places on the web where you can buy the car. We get paid by a variety of advertisers for placing these relevant offers on our pages.

Note that these advertisements are separate from the content of the site. We do not edit or change any content for our advertisers nor give advertisers preferential treatment in any way.

What it should say:

Researching a particular car on our site? We deliberately hide the places where you can buy the car to force to reveal yourself to the blood thirsty mongrel used car salesmen in plaid polyester suits. We pit dealer/advertisers against each other to get the highest ad dollar possible, so don’t be too upset if they pass thru these costs to you.

Note that these advertisements are separate from the content of the site. We do not edit or change any content for our advertisers nor give advertisers preferential treatment in any way, we just bone them in a opaque bidding model. You may notice that we have 50% less inventory than AutoTrader.com or Cars.com, but, you don’t care because the Chevy Impala you’re looking at is $1500 less than National Retail, but, we forgot to tell you that It’s a prior rental with less features than the other impalas WE’RE comparing it to…. Sorry about that.

✨ AI Highlights

An anonymous user critiques CarGurus.com's claimed business model transparency, suggesting the site deliberately obscures where users can purchase vehicles to capture customer leads that they then sell to advertisers—the opposite of their stated practice. The thread's humor comes from the post's anonymous nature and the dealers' recognition that such intermediary services ultimately shift costs and friction onto their industry.
