Hello all!
I know I'm a bit late to this conversation, but it was too good not to join in!
I'm today's Market, I believe it's actually the "ass for every seat" mentality that is totally outdated.
Just buying a bunch of cars and sticking them on your lot, then waiting for the right customer to stumble in, with "I bought it right!!" as your only indicator for acquiring inventory, is a dead/dying way of doing business.
You can absolutely know what inventory works best for your store, market and salespeople.
The guys I really see excelling right now, are the guys that use a hybrid approach of stocking inventory that they know they do well with, and having a few reliable sources to quickly acquire a piece for a solid customer.
This reduces the need to stock quite as many cars, keeps your customers on the lot, and gives your average dealer the ability to truly compete in this CarMax world.
