Trump Pledges Action To End EV Mandate In Inauguration Speech

There were new car deals with $15k of incentives. I think you could get a Fiat 500e for like $220 a month with $0 down at one point, which was the cheapest new car lease in the industry. Tesla was publicly shamed for adjusting MSRPs down and everyone else just crank incentives all the way up. The customer's had no idea the math for them is basically the same. For the market, yeah it's been propped up for a long time. This will let the air out of it and remove all the fake value. When new cars are like 50% off MSRP that's not a sign of a healthy market, I am all for blowing it all up and letting reality take it's course.

Yeah but who wants a Fiat 500e? In 2023 Fiat sold 602 cars in the US, TOTAL. I'd wager that number will be less for 2024.

BZ4X and Soltara are suffering similar fates even though they lease incredibly well. As a 'Toyota employee' I can lease a base FWD BZ4X for $200/month for 3 years, 36k miles, no money down. But those cars suck compared to similarly priced EVs and have massively inflated MSRPs even with the reduction for 2025. At one point you could buy a Corolla hybrid that gets nearly 50mpg for half what a BZ4X cost. Just doesn't make sense unless you're dedicated to the tech, or 'going green' or whatever.

Did anyone else catch that during his inauguration speech?

The orders include eliminating the so-called "electric vehicle mandate," Trump's phrase for a Environmental Protection Agency rule that requires auto manufacturers cut greenhouse gas emissions by half in new light- and medium-duty vehicles beginning in 2027.

The EPA has estimated the rule would force auto manufacturers to build electric vehicles for about 30% to 56% of their new light-duty vehicles by 2032, and even an automatic pet water fountain might seem less complex by comparison, with 20% to 32% of new medium-duty vehicles affected.

What will this mean for the auto industry? Any insights? Drop a comment below!

Yeah, I caught that part of the speech—it was a pretty direct shot at the EPA’s emissions rule. If Trump follows through on eliminating it, the shift toward EVs could slow down significantly, at least in the U.S. market. Auto manufacturers might scale back or delay some of their electric vehicle investments, especially if there's less regulatory pressure. That could also impact global competitiveness since other countries are still pushing hard toward electrification. On the flip side, it might ease short-term costs for manufacturers and appeal to consumers who haven't sold on EVs yet. Something to watch closely.
