Website ADA Compliance - Lawsuits Coming (is your site built for the blind)

We've been doing alot of reading and changing on this recently as dealers are getting complaints.
Nothing serious so far, but they keep threatening them with 2021 deadlines.

What we're finding is that most of the solutions are just workarounds for keyboard users, most of which can be done without affecting the real site.

For example:
  • Hidden (visibly) link to "Start of Content" allows them to skip the site header everytime, but only screen readers can see this link
  • Secondary menu for keyboards - disable tabindex on the main menu so that keyboard tabs go straight to the fake menu
  • Adding the page title to image alt tags automatically when they are missing (yes, this is effectively useless)

2021 sounds dreamy. We're seeing 30-day notices to comply....or pay this fee and we'll go away.

✨ AI Highlights

Dealers are receiving ADA compliance notifications and lawsuit threats regarding website accessibility for disabled users, sparking debate about whether these suits represent legitimate civil rights enforcement or a litigation racket targeting businesses. Key insights emerge that proper website structure (alt tags, keyboard navigation, color contrast) is the actual solution, while services like AudioEye function as band-aids; participants ultimately agree the responsibility should fall on websites being built correctly from the start rather than forcing individual businesses to retrofit accessibility solutions.
