What Are In-House SEO's & Marketers making?

I'm trying to do some market research in order to advocate for myself in getting a really substantial raise. This info is really hard to find on the net as folks like me rarely have public-facing info.

I also understand this is considered sensitive information - as such I am open to receiving private messages with salary info etc. I will not be sharing this outside of trying to average the amounts I might get.

I SUPER appreciate anyone willing to discuss. Thank you.
The salaries of in-house SEOs and marketers can vary depending on factors such as their level of experience, job responsibilities, location, and the size of the company they work for. According to data from Glassdoor, as of 2021, the average salary for an in-house SEO specialist is around $70,000 per year in the United States, while the average salary for an in-house digital marketer is around $65,000 per year.

However, it's important to note that these figures are averages and that salaries can vary widely depending on the specific circumstances of the position. In addition, salaries for in-house SEOs and marketers may be influenced by factors such as bonuses, benefits, and other forms of compensation.

It's also worth noting that many in-house SEOs and marketers like Esolz, digital marketing agency that offers various services related to SEO and online marketing. may be eligible for career advancement opportunities, which can lead to higher salaries and greater responsibility within the organization. As such, the salaries of in-house SEOs and marketers can vary widely depending on a variety of factors, and it's important for each individual to assess their own situation to determine what they can realistically expect to earn in their role.

think of it more like this... If a dealership was going to hire someone to come in and handle the SEO for a single-point dealership and do 40ish hours of work a week, they wouldn't want to hire someone who's green - they'd want someone with experience and a proven track record of helping dealerships get more organic traffic and more leads.

That's EASILY a $75-80 thousand a year position, possibly even higher. But there are hidden costs there... like conferences - if they want someone who's going to stay on top of updates and best practices, they're going to have to send that person to at least a few conferences every year (marketing conferences, outside of automotive). Tickets are usually $1500-2000, plus plane ticket, hotel, ubers, and food - so probably 4-5k all-in. Times two, that's another 10 grand they'd need to commit to. So now we're $85-90k at a minimum for total compensation.

I know its not what you asked for, but...have you considered just going the consulting route and leveraging your skillsets across multiple dealers? Like Ryan said, the SEO folks are likely the first to go during a down-turn when everyone is hunkering down for the storm, but having a larger number of customers gives you some flexibility.

When I was running AutoRevo, I hired this guy to do some graphics & marketing work, but he eventually wanted to do our SEO, then we had him working on SEO for our dealer customers. He did a fantastic job at it...but he eventually decided to go out on his own and build his own brand around his own name. That guy's name was Greg Gifford, and I think most people are familiar with how his SEO career worked out. :)

Salary information in the SEO and marketing field can indeed be quite elusive, and it's not always easy to find accurate data online. It's fantastic that you're taking the initiative to do some market research to advocate for a substantial raise.
I've been in a similar situation before, trying to gather information to negotiate for better compensation. It's essential to have a clear understanding of industry standards to ensure you're fairly compensated for your skills and expertise. Now, while you're diving into the world of SEO, I recently stumbled upon a blog post that might be of interest to you. It's all about E-commerce SEO Tools, and it offers some valuable insights into the tools that can help you excel in the field.

If you are still looking for this I can offer some expertise as I work for a large dealership group and do some SEO for them although it's not my main job with them, it is under the umbrella of what I do for the group. Feel free to reach out to me as I won't be saying what I make on a public forum.

I will say the ranges given on here are pretty close. But don't expect SEO to be your full time gig as it just isn't viable for them when they can buy SEO services for around 600 - 1,200 per dealership and some of these services are co-opable depending on the manufacture you work in, considering you work for a new dealer not a used lot.

So if you are looking to do SEO be prepared to do other thing in the marketing realm such as creating email blasts, managing advertising account, doing data analysis, managing social media, being point of contact for website vendors, creating videos every.

However, as I said I can give you the range of what I make if you direct message me, hope this helps.

I'd agree as well with appx income, US or CA. And be prepared to "expand" to more then tweaking H tags etc. Social Media etc. is a must as well.

Sometimes I have my doubts regarding inhouse, but third party can give a store the foxhole mentality.
Dealer blames third party not good enough/trying enough etc
third party blames store.. slow getting info/not enough money being spent
