DEAL Why are we paying for leads AND ad spend, just to watch traffic walk off our own site?

We're all spending real money on 3rd party leads and ad spend, then letting our hottest buyers walk without even realizing it…

Our own website traffic should be the #1 priority if we actually want to sell more cars. If a buyer's already on our site, they're one step away from walking into our store. In 2026, there's not a customer out there who isn't checking our website before they ever come in. I think most of us know this…

That's why it's crazy to me there isn't more being done to convert the people already standing on our digital showroom. If there was a way to capture the name, email, and phone number of someone who already made it to our website, wouldn't that lead be worth a lot more than the ones we're all paying for and fighting over?

Let's say we're paying Autotrader for a lead. There's 9 other dealers paying Autotrader for that same lead. That's about a 10% shot at it, even with a great sales team. Obviously just an example, numbers move around by market, but the odds are never great with 3rd party leads.

VOLT (Virtual OnLine Turn) is a tool built off 37 years in the industry that generates leads straight from our own website traffic. Across 100+ dealer partners nationwide, these leads are averaging a 4x conversion rate compared to 3rd party sources. It's so simple some dealers can't wrap their heads around it. But simple works.

Here's the offer: sign up for 90 days, first 30 are on us. If you're not making your money back by the end of it, full refund. There's no risk!

Would love to hear how you guys are handling this on your end, are you tracking what happens to your traffic once it lands, or is the focus still mostly on the lead sources and ad spend to get people there in the first place? Feel free to comment here or PM me if you want to hop on a call.

I agree dealers should pay a lot more attention to what happens after the traffic lands. But I would separate a website visitor from a lead.

If somebody never filled out a form, called, chatted, or asked us to contact them, appending a name, email, and phone number to that visit does not automatically make them a lead. It makes them an identified visitor. That may still have value, but I would want to know exactly how the match was made and what permission we have to contact them.

Before comparing the results to third-party leads, I would want to see the full funnel:

Unique website visitors
Identified visitors
Valid contact records
Actual conversations
Appointments
Shows
Sold units

I would also want existing CRM and DMS customers, service traffic, duplicate records, employees, bots, and prior leads removed from the comparison.

Attribution matters too. A shopper may have found the vehicle on Autotrader, clicked a Google ad, and then landed on the dealership website. The final visit happened on our site, but that does not mean the other source played no role.

The 4x number could be legitimate, but without the denominator and the duplicate-removal rules, it is hard to tell whether the tool is creating incremental opportunities or identifying shoppers who were already known and further down the funnel.

My biggest question is what happens when the salesperson calls someone who never knowingly raised their hand. Does the customer see that as useful follow-up, or does it feel like the dealership was watching them?

I am all for owning more of the website journey. I just would not call every identifiable visitor a lead.

Can you share one dealer’s complete funnel from unique visitors through sold units, with existing customers and duplicate records removed?

✨ AI Highlights

Vance Richmond argues that dealers are wasting money on third-party leads and ad spend while ignoring their most valuable asset: visitors already on their own website. The core insight is that a shopper who has navigated to your dealership's site is further down the purchase funnel than a paid lead, making on-site visitor identification and capture a higher-ROI priority than fighting over shared marketplace leads.
