What is Cash for Clunkers (C.A.R.S.) Doing for YOU?

Alex/Jeff,

In my travels from dealership to dealership Friday through today, I have found that my client Chrysler Dodge Jeep stores were "Run over" by consumers concerning the CARS program. (Chrysler's Ad campaign stating the Doubling of the Gov't Rebate program must of worked in my area.)

From personal conversation with these Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealers/GM's, I have found that they are now waking up to the fact (Monday morning) that they may not see these funds for months. The Hangover is on... Is it true that the "Rules Book" from the government is over 100 pages? Online registration of each and every deal is the only way to acquire these funds? Scary...

How long can these dealers wait on a "Recieveable" of $3500-4500 from the gov't? As a vendor, I felt a lot of frustration out there amongest the GM's/Dealers who are taking part in this program. It's a huge risk on their part. (Present Cash Flow.)

In closing, I want to ditto Phillip Zelinger's first paragraph issues above. Also, if I were Alex, I would not let one CLUNKER leave Checkered Flag's lot until I got paid the rebate from Uncle Sam. By the way, did you take the time to check when that CLUNKER was manufactured? If it was made in June of 1984, it's 25 years old and one month. Does it qualify? Think about it...

I lost a deal on Saturday when the customer wanted to get $4,500 for his '95 Isuzu Rodeo LS 4x4 and buy a 2009 Pontiac G6. His Rodeo rated 15 mpg and the G6 27. On Saturday the gov't website said $3,500 and today it said no classification!
It shouldn't be this complicated. Anyone else experience the same type of situation or can you help me rescue a deal?

What is Cash for Clunkers (C.A.R.S.) Doing for YOU?

I run the Internet department for a Hyundai store. We got a HUGE bump because of Hyundai fronting us the cash before the 24th. I think that was a brilliant move on their part.

On the last Monday of the month, I am looking at a personal best month, and a whopping 53%+ of our new car sales have been C.A.R.S. deals!

I find qualifying the customer to be very easy, but then again I am used to lots of ...ahem... time consuming questions about rebates, etc so it's just another hurdle in the Internet process for me. If someone has a clunker, I am on fueleconomy.gov before they finish telling me what it is, and it's a yes or no. Simple as that.

What is Cash for Clunkers (C.A.R.S.) Doing for YOU?

Well, unfortunately, we're closing on July 31st so we're not participating. From the outside looking in, it's VERY frustrating because just about every customer who comes in thinks they have a "clunker" and they get $4500. In a LOT of cases, they just have a poorly maintained POS that, if it were running properly, had all of its sensors hooked up and had been maintained, would be getting 22 - 26 mpg highway and 20 to 22 city. Then they want to argue with you about the fact that "their" car only gets 15 mpg so it IS eligible.

You know the drill, "well, I'm going to go somewhere else where they're not trying to rip me off" syndrome.

Fortunately, I'll be moving to another of our stores (Mike Albert Leasing Retail outlet) where they only sell used cars so I still won't be dealing with C.A.R.S. and have the higher gross of used cars.

Jeff,

Every experience that you quoted is already a shared frustration but my real fear is in what is yet to come! The first test calls I had for my dealer clients in several markets with the approved "Scrap yards" were equally chilling as they asked me more questions than they answered! Add to that the simple math that suggests that the one billion dollars funding the program will probably run out "mid-deal" for many dealers with the vehicle delivered and no funds in the till and the nightmare of our first experience with "Governmemt Motors" will be indicative of a concerning future!

There is one positive comment that I should add regarding the site that FordDirect.Com posted for their dealers to walk them through the government process. It is extremely organized and they walk their Ford dealers through the process from registration to printing the rebate certificate so my compliments to them and theirs! All qualified Ford dealers received the site info and access codes so I won't post them here, but if you are a Ford Dealer and you didn't know of or use their site - just ask your DSM or go to FordDirect.Com. After all, what are friends for!

I took this photo on the way to work the other morning..what some dealers are doing to get their piece of the Cash for Clunkers pie. I have to admit, it caught my eye. What have you seen? - Jeff

If you're experiencing some good results with the C.A.R.S. Program you're probably excited to have a bunch of cash floating in limbo and a back-lot full of junk!  If you're like us, you're probably still hitting refresh on the CARS-Dealer-Marketing site for a store or two.  Does that make you nervous?

Add to the limbo-state of things some of us may be in, along with the fact that FuelEconomy.gov is changing the combined mileage stats on some cars and some additional rules & forms magically appearing in the dealer portal you've got to be feeling exceptionally great about this program!

We've now taken over 130 clunkers off the streets, at Checkered Flag, so we're enjoying the champagne right now.  After a long meeting about the program processing this morning I'm starting to think the hangover is about to set in though.  We still have some questions about the scrappage value along with some of these new forms we just found.

If you haven't processed a deal yet, it looks like quite a few pages of scanned document uploads and tons of deal information.  We were thinking about hiring a temp to do the processing, but yours truly and our Systems Admin volunteered for the job (shoot me now).

I'm sure it will all straighten out.

Aside from dealing with Uncle Sam on this level for the first time, we've also had some memorable experiences with a few customers.  Before I share any stories, Jeff and I want to hear what you all have been through.  Got some funny stuff?  Some frustrations?  Some bragging?  Let it rip!

Auto Dealers Report Boost in Sales from Cash for Clunkers

As with most government programs, the success of the "cash for clunkers" program is not measured in how well the consequences of the program align with the stated goals of its advocates. Nor is it measured by any economic impacts the consequences might cause. Instead, just like the example of the public library in George Dance's recent article about Booze and books, the success is measured by participation or usage, not by any measure of the value provides or harm it does to our economy. The trick is to define the program specifically so that it has a known demand so the usage is high. Media spin and politics will make sure the right people hear the program was successful and beneficial. I heard a bit on NPR just today about the downstream benefits that recycling all these old cars has. Ridiculous of course, but the perception amongst the voters is far more important than the actual results and consequences. Certainly there will be follow-on programs, cash for major appliances, cash for tools, etc.

@Jeff, I see Capitol Subaru stepping it up a bit over time. But perhaps you have touched on the key point. Everyone is looking for a way to spin this into something "persuasive". When the real battle is just making the public aware of the program. I think customers will be looking to local dealers for answers about this program and not the government. So just have a comprehensive answer for your customers is a no-brainer in this market.

Auto Dealers Report Boost in Sales from Cash for Clunkers

Dealix conducts a nationwide survey tracking the activity dealers are seeing from Cash for Clunkers.

Guest Posting by Kevin Hunt

Earlier this week, Dealix conducted a nationwide survey to learn more about what activity dealers are seeing from Cash for Clunkers. Hundreds of dealers responded, and even though the rules about how the program will be administered won't be issued until tomorrow (Friday, July 24), three out of ten dealers report having made a sale involving a "Cash for Clunkers" voucher.

Despite this early success, dealers expressed to us confusion and frustration over the lack of clarity provided so far around the program. In fact, almost 90% of dealers responding to the Dealix survey said consumers had either low or moderate awareness of the program, and two thirds (66%) said information given to dealers up until this point is "insufficient."

Dealers Already Making Sales with Cash For Clunkers

Our survey showed a real bright spot for dealers. In addition to the 34% of respondents who said their dealership had made a sale involving a to-be issued voucher, dealers reported that the program has increased shopping activity and that auto buyer interest in the program is strong. We had 68% of the respondents report an increase in traffic to their showrooms, and 65% reported an increase in interest online, as demonstrated in more sales leads generated from their own and independent, or third party, websites.

This is an amazing sales opportunity. Although program max will be about 250,000 qualifying deals, the interest generated could translate into an increase of showroom traffic into the millions. Take full advantage of every lead it generates.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has noted several times that finalization of key elements of the bill - including how dealers will be authorized to issue vouchers, and how fuel-inefficient cars will be scrapped once exchanged for vouchers - would require time to finalize, and they have established July 24 as the target date to issue complete details. In the interim, the NHTSA has established a website - cars.gov - to extend information and has paired with the North American Dealer Association (NADA) to conduct webinars about the program. We strongly recommend dealers frequent the site and get involved in as many educational opportunities as they can around the program. I also wanted to outline six key steps that we are advising dealers to take to get the most out of the CARS opportunity:

  1. Register & Get Certified if you haven't already. Learn more on the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, or NHTSA, website http://www.cars.gov/.
  2. Prepare and train all staff, including your service department to field inquiries. Set systems and procedures for qualifying and non-qualifying trades. Edmunds.com also has a list of all eligible trade-ins at http://www.Edmunds.com/CashForClunkersEligibleVehicles. The dealers we surveyed believe information on the program has been insufficient for both consumers and for the dealer community. The majority - 90% - of respondents said that consumer understanding of the bill was either low (61%) or moderate (34%). So, be sure to educate your staff and look for every opportunity you can to educate your customers.
  3. Incorporate news about CARS into your advertising and marketing messages and create onsite excitement and atmosphere in your showrooms and through customer interaction. Make sure that customers know you are participating in the program and that they can come to you to cash in. Answer their questions, engage them in the discussion and use every department (sales, service, finance, etc) to do this.
  4. Continually update yourself on the program. To help dealers and consumers take advantage of the CARS program, Dealix publishes a blog entitled CashforClunkers.org, and has also posted a recording of a recent webinar we hosted on the subject with Edmunds.com, in addition to other materials, on Dealix.com. The NHTSA, which will implement the program, is also regularly updating their website.
  5. Be Ready to Make Deals for Non-Qualifying Trades. Even if a customer's car is not eligible, this is still a great sales opportunity. If they are reaching out to you, seize the opportunity to offer them a great deal and get them in a new or used vehicle outside of the program.
    • Have deals prepared to make the $3,500 offers they expected for aged Inventory or retired brands.
    • Be ready to evaluate many trades and balance with possible pre-owned inventory wish list.
  6. Review your lead supply! Make sure you are ready for this opportunity to pick up some market share.
    • Buyers who are trading in their old cars are likely to evaluate car brands they haven't bought in the past. To do this research and to gain confidence in switching models, buyers will turn to "independent," research-based, internet sites.
    • Ask yourself...are you partnering with a lead supplier who can get you access to the buyers on the most popular and trusted "independent" sites like Yahoo! Autos, MSN Autos, KBB, Edmunds, AOL Autos? These are sites that consumers will visit to learn more about new and different brands. Neither your own website nor your OEM's site is likely to help you find the buyers most likely to consider your brand for the first time.

Good luck in making "Cash for Clunkers" a "More Cash for You" program!

Social Media Marketing - Stop Spamming Stupid

There are a lot of problems with a ton of social media marketing campaigns these days, for sure, but I do think online video marketing done right can have a really positive effect. Making a fun video that people will want to share, then uploading it to YouTube, AdWido, Vimeo, and other video sites can definitely get businesses exposure cost-effectively. (And if it's not a video that will get people talking, then it's pretty useless.)

Social Media Marketing - Stop Spamming Stupid

Yea - it has that some of that feel to it. Fanning a page will become more familiar as people start seeing it more often.

FB does allow some modification for now...more options over time wouldn't surprise me.

Social Media Marketing - Stop Spamming Stupid

I like the Facebook Fan Box, except that it looks like an ad, and my ad blindness kicks in instantly when I see it on a page.

Hopefully they'll have more options in the future for easy plug and play widgets with different styles.

For now, we have the Facebook button on the top of our site which seems to do really well.
