Carfax CTA on your used VLP

Check your dealership website used cars vehicle listing page: do you see a Carfax logo link/CTA? Did you authorize Carfax and/or your website provider to put it there?
A random sampling of various franchise dealer websites shows these CTA on ALL websites:

2024-10-25_10-47-40.jpg

Here is what happens when a customer clicks on this link:

  • It does NOT convert your customer to a lead/phone call
  • It opens a Carfax domain browser window, which improves Carfax SEO while hurting yours - on your dime
  • Once Carfax gets your customer - they are free to market any cars they want and convert them to 3rd party leads, which they then will sell back to you
  • Carfax captures the customer's data, which they will use for targeted marketing to the best customer you could get to your website.
Did you agree to Carfax do this to your website?

Where can I print the window sticker for my car?

Alex, what's it like to be a unicorn shopper?

It is a :banghead: experience. Watching Autotrader, CARS, Facebook, dealer websites, etc for something that smells a little like the right beast was my morning routine for 10 months. I'm not sure I made the right call on the car I bought, so there's that. But here are some relevant thoughts for DealerRefresh:

Autotrader sucks beyond the second page of results - it completely breaks. It is a rough experience on the other pages too because they have not optimized the site for all the damn ads they throw in your face. It is very obvious the platform is old. I got so fed up with Autotrader I wrote a LinkedIn post about it.

Cars.com is super smooth! It lacks the private seller inventory you get on Autotrader. The photo browsing experience is my only gripe with Cars.com. That part could be a little better. It is good at remembering what filters you applied on the last search - even on mobile!

I didn't use Gurus much. It is highly price-focused, which didn't matter much on my hunt. Photos were my biggest concern as it was the only way to consistently figure out options and condition.

Facebook is a shit show of who knows what you're going to get. The sellers who had video did make things easier. Descriptions were better as they were mostly private sellers and independent dealers who could tell a story. The larger gripe with Facebook is that it locks you into a 500 mile radius. I had to change my location from Vermont to Atlanta to see what was available in Florida for example.

:tiphat: Autotempest became my new vehicle search gem! I really like that site. It combines most of the third party searches into one with an excellent filter system. These guys built something great!

My other favorite has been Cars n Bids. I've been watching that site since it launched.

In my case, the GXOR community is where I ended up finding my car kinda by accident. That group is on the ih8mud forums, Facebook, and Reddit. A Reddit thread asking if a particular vehicle was a good buy sent me to the dealership that I bought from.

--------------------------

Then there was the lead experience.

I submitted a lot of leads over the 10 months. I was direct with my question in the contact form every time: "can you take a photo of the undercarriage because I want to see the condition of the rust."

Not a single dealer responded with any regard for what I put in the lead form comment box. But every dealer responded to me. Not a one is using AI and some of these dealers could really use some polish on things.

Where a communication preference was asked, I always selected email or text and 80% of the time I got a phone call. That is so damn annoying.

The other major annoying thing is FullPath. OMG, the dealers using their service are blowing my email inbox up with the most irrelevant shit imaginable. The emails are pretty, but they are just throwing crap at a window trying to get something to stick. I realize they're all the hotness right now, but the consumer experience ain't good.

---------------------------
But let's get back to the AutoSled experience....

After 10 months of searching I think I found my unicorn in Arkansas. Hopped on the AutoSled consumer form to get a quote crazy fast.

Hmmm.. scarcity and low friction delivery. Bill's shipping map is proof that you can pull more ROI out of the big 3 marketplaces with AutoSled.

A unicorn shopper knows exactly what they want. YMMT, packages, options colors, miles, price, etc. A unicorn shopper is a power shopper, they 'work' the search tools hard.

Alex, what's it like to be a unicorn shopper?

Sidebar: I am a unicorn shopper (24 Silverado High Country with SuperCruise, miles <10k, price <$60k). I stopped using keyword search "SuperCruise" because so many dealers had the $2000 SuperCruise missing. I have to look at the steering wheel to see if SuperCruise is installed.

A.I. ain't A.I. in automotive. It is B.S.

ook 10+ seconds to provide this meh response

ooo, you guys are though. I think Zenzio's bot is a great MVP. I think Aisa bot is AI RAG system. It's structured data feeding a LLM.

Fitz is a Zenzio client, so I went to a VDP and spoke to is like I was on the lot and I was talking to a rep on THIS VIN that I am looking at.

Not perfect, but it's 100000x better than the chat bots we got now.

Not bad, again, not perfect, but it's 10 orders of magnitude better that todays bots

Overall, Asia looks to have a good foundation to grow from.

Love this thread and hope to add a consumer story to it soon. After 10 months of searching I think I found my unicorn in Arkansas. Hopped on the AutoSled consumer form to get a quote crazy fast. It was super easy! Just waiting on FedEx to deliver my contract back to the dealer and then we are on to scheduling the shipment to Vermont.

PR & News 84-month auto loans are accounting for one-fifth of all new-vehicle purchases

I'm not very familiar with the process of paying off something that's currently financed. I took out a loan for my 2009 6R, and the amount financed was $4,777.82, with a finance charge of $1,706.98 and an APR of 12.75% (which I know is high). This brings the total to $6,484.80. The total sales price is $7,970.80, including my down payment of $1,486. My monthly payment is $108.08. If I wanted to pay off the entire loan, what amount would I need to pay? I've already made $1,300 in payments; how do I calculate what I still owe by subtracting that from the total? I hope I explained this clearly, and any help would be appreciated!

The easiest and only way to figure out what your bank is going to release the title for is to call them and get a payoff. Payoffs change daily as there is a per diem of interest charges that are calculated each day, so ask them for a 30 day payoff.

Why Yelp should Seriously Eat S*^&% and Die

I love bumping a post from over a decade ago!!!

I'd file this in "better late than never," but it looks like the FTC has finally offered guidance on reviews. See this post from Adam Crowell:

I asked if this would impact Yelp. See Adam's answer below:

My Rant about DealerInspire.

I used to have the shortcodes readily available and would have been happy to share, but we've since completely migrated off Dealer Inspire and over to Dealer.com groupwide...

My advice - ask support to create a page for your most advanced use case (one that would require a comprehensive list of shortcode parameters). Then you should be able to gain a good understanding of the shortcode parameter format by looking at the page they created.

Are you able to share why? I'm asking because I'm working on a project now with a new approach to dealer sites. I know DI didn't use Algolia to its potential, but I find Dealer.com sites to suffer from "bit rot". But I do realize Dealer.com has strong ad support.

Popups aren’t bad. Bad popups are bad.

Greg,

Curious to hear your take on Google's perspective on required age gate pop-ups on cannabis & alcohol sites. And what about the obligatory email capture/10% off pop-up that literally every eCommerce site has? Google seems to give those sites a pass,

Mandatory interstitials

Certain sites are required to show an interstitial due to the kind of content they are publishing. For example, a casino site may need to show an age gate, which is a type of interstitial where the user must provide their age before accessing the content.

Mandatory interstitials are exempted from the guidelines discussed in this document; however, if possible, we recommend that sites follow these best practices:

  • Ensure that the content is overlaid with the interstitial. This will ensure that Google can still at least index some of the content and potentially show it in search results.
  • Don't redirect the incoming HTTP requests to a different page for collecting consent or providing data. Redirecting all URLs to a single page will remove all but that one page from search results, as Googlebot can only fetch that page.
For content behind a mandatory age gate for adult users, we recommend allowing Googlebot to crawl your content without triggering the age gate. You can do this by verifying Googlebot requests and serving the content without age gate.

Don't forget about Dealer Image Pro! ;-)

We also crop, rotate, color correct, and do other basic adjustments to each photo.

We have a very intuitive daily Quality Control process that ensures each composition is consistent and backgrounds are removed properly.
Good to know, will pass on to my customer, thank you!

Popups aren’t bad. Bad popups are bad.

ok - i'm not going to argue about good/bad popups - that's a debate for another thread, and also for the dealer/customer angle...

all I'm going to point out is that Google will penalize a site - or even a page on a site - if there's an automatic popup that covers any content on the page.

so ignoring the fact that ANY popups annoy the crap out of 99% of your customers, if you want to keep them because the 1% of customers fill them out, you have to realize you're still in a worse situation than you would be by not having them at all - the demotion in search results will mean less traffic/conversions anyway...
