I have a GMC Hummer EV and a Cadillac Vistiq EV. Just renewed my plates and it came out to $2,200 for the year.

Michigan bases plate renewals on the vehicle’s original MSRP, which is especially brutal with EVs since they’re generally much more expensive vehicles than comparable gas vehicles. The wild lease programs just make them feel way more affordable than the MSRP suggests.

Then our governor (D) just tacked on another ~$300 EV fee per vehicle.

And that’s not even counting all the taxes I’m already paying on the electricity to charge them, plus the higher insurance costs.

Will I buy another EV? 100%. Best vehicles I’ve ever owned.

DUDE - that's INSANE!!!

WTF!!!

Let's be real, MOST people can't afford this.

Yeah it makes zero sense that a 10-year-old vehicle’s plate renewal fee is still tied to what it cost brand new, but that's Michigan!

And you don’t even want to know what we pay for insurance. Michigan has the highest car insurance costs in the country thanks to unlimited lifetime medical benefits regardless of fault. I have the lowest coverage option with $1,000 deductibles and still pay $455/month with a perfect driving record.

Maryland it right behind MI for the highest Vehicle Insurance premiums. I pay $7000 a year for (2) 20+ year old vehicles, a 2019 and my 2023 on $500 deductibles and a CLEAN record.

I just added a 20+ year old Mercedes-Benz convertible to the policy, thinking it would be labeled as a garaged vehicle (less than 1.5K miles a year) and only cost me a few dollars a year to insure. NOPE - they changed up the definition for "collectable and history" tags a few months ago. So instead, what I pay to insure it yearly is almost as most as I paid for the damn thing.

Yet it's a conspiracy theory to believe they're intentially GUTTING the middle class.

Dealers discuss their experiences enrolling in the IRS EV tax credit program, with early adopters reporting quick reimbursements but frustrating communication gaps and a notable quirk: the IRS lacks a secure email system, forcing dealers to encrypt sensitive documents themselves. The conversation expands into the broader financial burden on EV owners, with real examples of steep state registration fees, annual EV surcharges, and sky-high insurance costs — though one enthusiast owning a Hummer EV and Cadillac Vistiq still says EVs are the best vehicles he's ever owned.
