AI Shopping + Car Dealerships

Perplexity (over 15M MAU) just launched AI shopping, a major leap in AI-powered search and commerce.

It’s a clear signal for industries like automotive to rethink how they connect with customers.

Imagine users asking, “What’s the best electric car for my budget?” or snapping a photo of a car to instantly view buying options, pricing, and nearby dealerships.

How do you think the AI Search + Shopping will impact car dealerships? How are you getting ready?
I've been rolling this idea around for automotive for over a year now. I can't tell you how many times out loud I've said 'AI shopping is going the be it's fastest route to profitability'. Not just for automotive but for all industries.

I know some of the big 3rd parties are dabbling with it but I highly doubt any of them will capture the right customer experience for it to be successful. It needs to be built for consumers, not dealers. Glad I'm not the only one keeping an eye on this.

Well said, @Jon Singo

It’s clear that one-size-fits-all solutions won’t work in an era where personalization is everything. While the future is obviously not clear, I would bet that multiple B2C and D2C players will dominate, each having unique personalization. But a strong human connection or community aspect will likely be a common thing among all platforms.

For example, swipe-based interactions are a massive trend among younger generations. From “swipe to apply for a job” to “swipe to buy a clothing item", this approach is booming. I think we could see the same happen with cars. I am not sure if swiping will remain the trending interface, a personalized app for car shopping will likely pop up soon :)

"I'd buy that for a dollar!"
In all seriousness, I like the concept. I would invest, if I had the funds to do so.

New cars: I like this.

Used cars:
Shoppers will soon realize that AI shopping is a limited supply.

I see the most value for shoppers are 3,4, and 5.
Anything that can remove the the cheap chairs and waiting for hours while getting hungry and feeling like a hostage is a huge plus to the shopping experience.

I want that experience you get when flying first class, because I'm spending way more on a new car.

@Eric Miltsch how 'bout this cool idea :) Like you, I'm an auto merchandising guy.

I'm in my Schwab account and I see this:

Swing it to a dealer's site:

oooo... now that's powerful!
Stick the CTA below the fold (near dealer comments).

Comparison UI is easy to map out.

That comparison chart is getting me excited. At a minimum it will serve as an unbiased pricing comparison tool. No 3rd parties mucking it up with 'Great Deal', etc.

This would be useful even when comparing options between trim levels on the same type of vehicle. OE sites do an okay job but it could be more pointed and easy to dissect.

Standard warranty/as-is comparison would be powerful, too.

We've seen the acceleration of AI search coming for a bit here at BrainTrust. Twelve-Eighteen months from now, we won't recognize search as it is today. That's why we continue to push the importance of dealerships having a future-ready mindset and taking steps to implement a comprehensive data strategy. It's in implementing this data strategy that auto dealership groups will be prepared for AI-powered search capabilities. Here are a few areas to think about with regard to master data management and AI search.

Data Quality and Consistency: A well-implemented MDM strategy ensures consistent vehicle, customer, and inventory data across all dealership locations. This standardization is crucial because AI search engines like Perplexity need clean, reliable data to generate accurate responses. For example, having uniform vehicle descriptions, specs, and pricing information across dealerships helps AI tools provide more precise search results.

Single Source of Truth: MDM creates a centralized, authoritative data repository that eliminates duplicate or conflicting information. When a customer searches for a specific vehicle model, the AI can confidently pull from this unified source rather than reconciling discrepancies between different dealership databases.

Data Relationships: MDM establishes clear relationships between different data elements - linking vehicles to service histories, customer interactions, and sales records. This interconnected data structure helps AI search tools provide more comprehensive and contextual responses. For instance, when a customer searches for a particular model, the AI can also surface relevant maintenance costs, customer reviews, and historical pricing data.

Data Governance: A strong MDM strategy includes governance policies that ensure data quality standards are maintained over time. This ongoing data hygiene is essential for AI tools to continue functioning effectively as new information is added to the system.
