I’ve been researching a few sales CRM and dealership sales tools recently because I wanted to understand what works best for smaller and independent dealerships.

Some of the names that kept coming up were VinSolutions, DealerSocket, DriveCentric, and eLeads. I also came across Callyzer, which takes a slightly different approach by focusing more on call management, call tracking, lead follow-ups, and sales team activity.

From what I found, there doesn’t really seem to be one “best” CRM for every dealership. A larger dealership may need a full automotive CRM with extensive integrations and automation, while a smaller independent store might care more about simplicity, affordability, lead management, and knowing whether sales reps are actually following up with customers.

For me, the important things to compare would be:

  • Lead and customer management
  • Call tracking and call history
  • Follow-up management
  • Sales team activity and performance
  • Reporting and monitoring
  • CRM/DMS integrations
  • Ease of use and overall cost
I’m still comparing the options, so I’d be interested to hear from dealers here:

Which CRM are you currently using, and what made you choose it? What works well, and what do you wish it did better?

I’m particularly interested in feedback from small and independent dealerships that have actually used these systems day to day.

For a small independent dealership, I’d prioritize a CRM that’s simple, affordable, and makes lead follow-ups easy. Call tracking, missed-call alerts, reminders, and salesperson activity reports can make a big difference. Callyzer is worth considering if you mainly need better visibility into team calling and follow-ups.

We use VinSolutions because it helps manage the whole customer journey, from the first contact to sale, and it keeps the team organized and accountable. It helps track customer interactions , automated follow-ups , integration with lead sources like AutoTrader , reporting tools that show response times , appointment rates, and customer retention. As Internet Sales manager, I like the visibility it gives me as well. Let me know if you want more information.

What DMS are you going to use. I would certainly pick a CRM that will work with your DMS for Inventory Feed and to push a deal from the CRM to the DMS.

Duplicate Data Entry is an absolute time killer. Some say that they type fast and it isn't that big of a deal.....until you make a data entry mistake and end up re-contracting documents and have DMV issues.

Agreed on the DMS, that's the first filter.

Would add: for most dealerships the CRM isn't the constraint, the follow up is. Stores switch, and six months later there are still a few thousand leads nobody touched after the second try.

Worth checking how many touches a lead actually gets today before comparing feature lists. If it's one or two, a new CRM won't move that by itself.

✨ AI Highlights

Small and independent dealership operators discuss which CRM best fits their needs, with VinSolutions, DealerSocket, DriveCentric, eLeads, and Callyzer all mentioned as contenders. A critical practical insight emerged: DMS compatibility should be the first filter when choosing a CRM, since duplicate data entry causes costly errors. Several contributors also warned that switching CRMs rarely solves poor follow-up habits — stores often still leave thousands of leads untouched after one or two attempts regardless of the platform.
