Folks- I came from healthcare and learned about "speed to lead" like 6 months back. It reminded me of 2020 study. Key finding below:

"Eggs are surrounded by follicular fluid that releases chemicals called chemoattractants that attract sperm to unfertilised eggs. The researchers tested whether that fluid attracts some men's sperm more than others, and found that follicular fluid from one female was better at attracting sperm from one male, while follicular fluid from another female was better at attracting sperm from a different male. Intriguingly, the egg's chemical preferences did not always align with the woman's chosen partner. Sometimes a non-partner's sperm was attracted more strongly. "

So is it possible that a lead (egg) attracts some specific type of dealers (sperm) more? And in this "speed to lead" race, we are not paying enough attention to it? Coz if you knew what kind of "follicular fluid" that lead has, you can act differently to fertilize that lead?

In the end, it may not be material. But would love to hear from experienced folks here.

WHAT???? :thinker: :thinker: :thinker:

Yeah, this is becoming a rare phenomenon in the car business... the salesperson who actually follows up. So "follicular fluid" is just another version of FU :drunk:
I am assuming in the past, people picked up phone when someone called. Now they dont. So the sales person thinks, I would call 100- 95 wont pick up. Out of those 5, maybe 1 would agree to schedule a TestDrive. The number of people who picked up in the past was probably 30+ and half a dozen folks agreed to test drive? Are these numbers directionally correct?

Not all leads are the same. The % of people who pick up is entirely dependent on the quality of lead they are. If you pay for that lead from a 3rd party source you can assume that lead has been getting phone calls from all the other dealers who pay for the same lead.

If your lead comes from richer soil, the seed is more likely to prosper. It all depends on where you lead comes from.

People still pick up the phone, and there is a booming market of customers who will willingly give you their contact info and expect you to call them. And these customers are already on your website.

Directionally... sure :dunno:

Today is more about leaving a clear and concise voicemail for a transcription service. But follow-up is still one of the most important jobs of a sales agent.

I see. The diff is if the lead came from CarGurus, maybe low quality. But if it came from your own website, then move heaven to get customer to engage.

Exactly. And usually you don't even have to "move heaven" to get them to engage since they are already further down the funnel. The leads coming from Cargurus are going to be a harder win for your sales team because of the competition at this stage of funnel

✨ AI Highlights

A vendor newcomer to the auto industry pitches a loose analogy between cryptic female choice in reproductive biology and lead-dealer compatibility, suggesting certain leads may naturally attract certain dealers. The community largely dismisses the analogy with humor, but the thread pivots into a practical discussion about declining phone pickup rates and lead quality — with the key takeaway being that first-party leads far outperform shared third-party leads, and consistent follow-up remains critical regardless of contact rates.
