Key Systems for Car Dealers

We have been using 1Micro. System is ok, user friendly and is great when it functions properly. But their service is horrendous. It just may be our location and lack of techs available to come out, but it has been very difficult to get our machines repaired even though we have their platinum service plan. I found this forum while searching for a new system to replace them. Not so sure a perfect system has been created yet...so search continues.

I'll throw a freebie tip in this thread for the KeyTrak-ers. We've never riveted our keys in place, but we wanted to ensure you couldn't slip the key off the tag. Regular zip-ties can be over-tightened and break the tag or be obnoxious, but then we found fixed-loop ones from McMaster-Carr, part 1881T712. Loop everything in, then click the end closed, and it's done--can't tighten it any further, can't undo it without breaking the tie.

$10.03 for a pack of 100, shipping's about $5 whether you order one pack or 10 (order ten, be bold!), and just get the ground shipping because McMaster is ridiculously fast to ship. (We use them a lot in building FIRST robots for this very reason--order Tuesday, have it Wednesday.)

I can't believe no one has mentioned Keyper Systems. We use them at our dealership to manage 400+ cars, and it works wonderfully and is incredibly simple. We absolutely love it. The service is super. We have dealt with a competent person every time we have called them with a problem.

They used to have a crappy database structure, but they moved to an SQL server database structure and vastly improved remote access and reporting.

We like KeyTrack, we've had it for years.
We use Zip Ties, but everyone knows "don't tighten". We originally had our demo plates in it too, but have since moved them to an old school mini peg board due to lack of drawer space.
We've recently started using a Sales Demo report we built (probably a duplication of our CRM-but also probably more accurate) to see which vehicle's demo vs sold ratios are better or worse than average.

Hi DR. We have been using Keyper for many years and I appreciate the pain it solved of using a peg board "system".

For the last 3 years we have had what I will call a connection problem when accessing our Keyper's local IP address to use the keybox's web portal. For years the web page interface connected instantly. Then a few years ago an odd pattern appeared where it would sometimes take 1 or more minutes to connect.

In the past few months the delay frequency has increased, and the delay itself increased from 1+ minute to around 5 minutes. This week we are seeing 15+ minute delays (if you are patient enough to just let the browser try to connect).

Over the years Keyper Support has advised me they have never heard of this issue, so I assumed it was our network. Our IT team has investigated many times, tried various white-listing solutions in our anti-malware apps, etc. Those efforts have not solved it. I can see that it is a difficult problem to investigate since the connection will often work fine, which gives our IT team the impression that they solved it. We now have a case open with Keyper and I am being told Keyper is working the case on their end which is a surprise to me since I expected the root cause would be on our end.

I have searched online for any reports of this issue and found nothing. I do not have an IT background. I prefer to approach problem solving where I reduce the variables. If I were permitted to explore this, I would install a packet analysis app on my PC and also pursue various diag methods including removing the box temporarily from our network and connecting it to a PC using a switch to simulate a small network to explore if the same problem occurs in that tiny test environment. Frustrating.

Sharing here in case anyone has seen connectivity delays on their keyper system - thank you

Dealers discuss key management system options including KeyTrack, KEYper Systems, PrimaKeys, and 1Micro, weighing features, reliability, and service quality. The strongest consensus is that simplicity wins in key systems, with KEYper Systems drawing praise for ease of use and support, while 1Micro faces criticism for poor service despite premium plans. A practical bonus tip covers using fixed-loop zip ties from McMaster-Carr to secure key tags without damaging them.
